The Dance of Social Stratification

30 Oct 2024

It’s no secret that the Imperium is in a state of relocation and that we’re in the process of building a new empire in the galactic South. It’s been very interesting watching the member corps jockey for the best real estate and to position themselves for success over their competition within the alliance. There’s a stark difference in attitude and general social tone between the ra-ra-ra of the announcement and the movement of our forces across the 49-U regional gate and the Great Settlement, as we’re calling it.

The social tone has shifted dramatically. The initial excitement of the migration has given way to a mix of anxiety and opportunism. Some corps are thriving in the chaos, leveraging their connections and resources to claim prime locations. Others, however, are struggling to maintain cohesion amidst the pressure.

Goonswarm Federation is busy laying down infrastructure throughout our new holdings, and member corps are ostensibly forced to live out of whatever structures happen to be there in the meantime. This is a necessary inconvencience as the plate spinning and cat herding of empire management would only be made more complicated by 500 simultaneous structure drops without any semblance of a plan for placement within their respective grids. However, this creates challenges for member corps and their leadership. Our members are chomping at the bit to put down some roots and get back to playing the spacegame (tm) on their terms. Some of these members have multiple accounts they’re trying to PLEX, which is made very risky and difficult by a lack of infrastructure.

As we traverse this uncertain terrain, the intricate dance of social stratification within Goonswarm becomes increasingly apparent. Groups that were once content with their place in the hierarchy now find themselves vying for prominence, eager to establish their foothold in the new region. It’s like watching some kind of ant farm, with micro-alliances forming and fracturing over the most desirable systems and positions. The sense of urgency is palpable.

A critical observation is how this migration reflects broader themes within EVE’s player-driven economy and social landscape. The reliance on shared infrastructure underscores the interdependence of corps within the Imperium. The very success of our new empire hinges not just on individual ambition but on collaboration and mutual support.
